Specialties:Dr. Stewart is a licensed clinical health psychologist in the departments of Psychiatry and Gastroenterology at Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed her clinical internship in Health Psychology at Rush University Medical Center and postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Health Psychology at VCU. Her research has focused on biobehavioral correlates of emotion and psychopathology that relate to health status in persons with cancer, HIV, and obesity and she has particular interest in the mechanisms by which individuals commit themselves to and maintain changes in lifestyle (e.g. motivation, positive emotion, self-monitoring). Her current research is focused on optimizing strategies for integrating behavioral weight management services into medical settings. Building on her experience working with patients before and after bariatric surgery, she is now specializing in treatment of individuals with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Her goal is to increase the reach and effectiveness of these interventions by combining in-clinic services with emerging technologies (i.e. SMS messaging, internet based learning modules, etc.) to bolster motivation and adherence.
