Current Role: Outpatient Faculty

Hometown: West Des Moines, Iowa

Undergraduate Education: Luther College, Decorah, Iowa

Medical Education: Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical School in Des Moines, Iowa

Background Information

I became interested in Osteopathic Medicine because of its well-rounded approach to patient care, and the emphasis placed on both mental and physical health. I realized the crucial role that mental health plays in a person’s life, and how both mental and physical health are interconnected and equally essential to a well-balanced life.

Interest in Psychiatry

Many different factors and life experiences encouraged me to pursue psychiatry as a profession, one of which is my fascination with the complex nature of the brain and understanding the etiologies behind many different mental illnesses. I am amazed at how research has changed our understanding of mental health and improved the quality of life for so many people. I was also drawn to psychiatry because there is so much left to be discovered. This is an exciting time for psychiatry and it is extremely rewarding to be able to offer patients more options, improved medications and better understanding of their particular condition.

Interest in VCU Residency

I chose VCU Psychiatry Residency program for several reasons. We are a well-rounded teaching program, and we learn about how biological, psychological and social factors affect mental illness, as well as how they can all be integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan for patients. This program has taught me how to be a solid therapist, and combine psychotherapy and medication management into an efficient and compassionate combination of treatment. I was also drawn to the diverse patient population in Richmond, and I have enjoyed learning about new cultures. My program has also allowed me the flexibility to develop other interests in psychiatry, and I have had the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Susan Kornstein, who is internationally known for her research in women's mental health.

Future Plans

I am interested in Women’s Mental Health, and I plan to work in an academic setting, teaching residents and students, as well as participating in clinical research.

Other Comments

It can be very challenging to pick a residency program that seems like a "good fit", and one of the most important factors is resident collegiality. I believe that our residents have a close relationship with each other, and, being a medium sized program, we find ways to build our relationships outside of the work setting. I encourage you to come and take a look at our program, and I look forward to meeting you!
