Moran Joel B. Moran, MD

Current Role: PGY-4 Resident and Chief Resident

Hometown: Binghamton, New York

Undergraduate Education: State University of New York at Binghamton, VCU

Medical Education: VCU School of Medicine

Background Information

I was raised in Upstate New York, and got the travel bug early. After pursuing undergraduate degrees in Philosophy and Chemistry, I spent 7 years working various jobs and seeing the world before entering medical school. I feel that varied life experiences afford the broad perspectives that are essential to caring for patients as a whole.

Interest in Psychiatry

I did not consider a career in psychiatry until my third year of medical school. During my M3 psychiatry rotation I discovered there is a fascinating intersection between science, medicine and human behavior. Psychiatry is an area of health care where physicians can have a profound impact on the lives of patients and the families affected by mental illness.

Interest in VCU Residency

Having gone to VCU School of Medicine, I was well acquainted with the Department of Psychiatry, and was truly impressed. As an integral part of a major medical center that provides extensive indigent care and has a busy Level I Trauma Emergency Department, the VCU Psychiatry Residency program gives residents an opportunity to see a tremendous range of psychopathology and to care for patients truly in need. Richmond itself is a very livable, affordable city with many cultural opportunities and in close proximity to the ocean, mountains, and Washington, D.C.

Future Plans

My interests include Medical Psychiatry, Emergency Psychiatry and Consult Liaison Psychiatry. I am considering the excellent CL fellowship here, and will likely have a career in academic medicine, with an eye on medical education and cutting-edge research in the field of mental health.

Other Comments

I am more than satisfied with my choice of residency programs. The residents are a diverse group from many different backgrounds yet are united in their support for each other and their commitment to mental health. The world-renown faculty are dedicated to resident education and are always accessible. Those interested in a program with in-depth training in both medical psychiatry and psychotherapy with opportunities in research and the various subspecialties should strongly consider VCU.
