Interest in Psychiatry

My interest in medicine was born years ago in my early adolescence. I found the biological sciences fascinating and intriguing. This does not ultimately explain how I pursued medicine but it is at the core of why. When I reached college, I found myself in the dilemma of how to reconcile my need to care for others and my interest in science. The compromise was medicine and I have not looked back since. The journey through medical school was arduous but enlightening. Thus, in the midst of this journey, I have found my niche. Psychiatry was exhilarating and thought provoking. I particularly enjoyed the time I was able to spend with patients and the challenge of creating rapport with the mentally ill. By this time in my medical training, I was faced with the challenge of finding a suitable residency. This led me to seek for an educational environment that would train me to combine multiple modalities thus, teaching a well- rounded approach to the patient. It was obvious from the interview at MCV-VCU that this program would offer what I was looking for. The last six months have been exciting and very educational. Furthermore, I have found the camaraderie among by peers to be stimulating and inviting. I look forward the next years of training here.

Interest in VCU Residency

I found that MCV-VCU offered a comprehensive approach to psychiatry. My interest in having as many tools in my possession to offer is met here. The staff, faculty and residents have always been welcoming and the teaching is established such that it welcomes dialogue and inquisition.

Future Plans

I have a strong leaning towards child and adolescent psychiatry but I am keeping my options open. As the exposure to various subspecialties continues, I am certain it will become clear where I should be.
