Background Information
Having lived in Richmond for 10 years prior to starting residency, I was already familiar with the Department of Psychiatry at the time I had to make a decision about where to apply. As a social worker the majority of my work was with people with serious mental illnesses who lived in the community.
Interest in Psychiatry
I became interested in working with people with mental illnesses while working as a social worker in a psychosocial rehabilitation program. Many people have the idea that psychiatry is a frustrating specialty due to its lack of "cures" and the chronicity of some of the severe mental illnesses. My experience has shown, quite to the contrary, that the impact you can have on the lives of those with mental illnesses and their families is profound, relieving intense suffering and helping people to acheive things that would have been impossible twenty years ago. It is a great time to be working in the field.
Interest in VCU Residency
I have been fortunate to work with several outstanding faculty members at one of the local community mental health centers, and I was impressed by the quality of the residents with whom I'd worked in my clerkships in medical school. The diversity of the patient population that is seen through the various inpatient and outpatient settings affiliated with our program is unmatched, as is the breadth of the interests, approaches, and theoretical backgrounds of our faculty. Just to day I've worked with and had didactic sessions with the gamut: a genetic researcher, a psychoanalyst, an inpatient child psychiatrist, a psychopharmacologist/ clinical researcher. Talking with my colleagues who have graduated, there is no doubt that I'll emerge from this program with the knowledge and skill base to work in any setting.
Future Plans
My primary interest is working with the seriously mentally ill population, and I expect to do that through community mental health, and clinical and program research.
