PGY-1 Internship

Applicants for the PGY-1 Internship must meet the following requirements:
  1. Graduation from an accredited American medical school. For international medical school graduates, a complete and current ECFMG certificate and appropriate visa status are required. Documentation of graduation from medical school and a transcript are required.

  2. Complete application on ERAS. Hard copies or faxed applications will not be accepted.

    1. Current ECFMG Certification

    2. USMLE Step 1 and Step 2: minimum score criteria may apply. (Step 3, if available)

    3. Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) passed

    4. TOEFL (English exam) scores

  3. If not a U.S. citizen or holder of a green card (permanent resident), the applicant must be able/willing to obtain a J-1 Clinical Visa (only visa accepted at the VCU HealthSystem’s MCV Hospitals).

  4. Either documented enrollment in medical school or involvement in direct patient care activity within the past four years.

  5. Letter from the dean of your medical school (Dean’s letter) and an official copy of your transcripts.

  6. At least one letter of recommendation from a supervising psychiatrist, e.g., Department of Psychiatry Chair, program director, medical student clerkship director or attending physician.

  7. A minimum of three months of medical school rotations inU.S. or Canadian hospitals OR direct patient care activity in the United States or Canada. Direct patient care may include externships, but not observerships or pure clinical research.

  8. The above-mentioned direct patient care activity in theUnited States or Canada must be documented by a minimum of three (3) letters of recommendation from U.S. or Canadian physicians who observed your clinical work and can comment on your academic, professional and personal performance.
At the discretion of the Residency Admissions Committee, the applicant may be invited for interviews with members of the committee and faculty. The Residency Admissions Committee carefully will review interviewed applicants for acceptance; the department chair approves the final decision.



PGY-2, PGY-3 and PGY-4

All applicants, including those transferring from another psychiatry training program changing to psychiatry from another medical specialty or resuming training after a hiatus must ful-fill requirements given above for PGY-I admission. In addition, advanced-level applicants must have completed internship requirements of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Credit also may be given for further residency training if it meets requirements of the Board and of this program. In each case of transfer, the director of the applicant's previous training program will be contacted.
