Program Goals
The goals of the VCU Psychiatry Residency Program include training doctors who:
- Develop clear competence as a physician specialized in psychiatry.
- Adopt a lifelong habit of gaining new knowledge based on critical thinking and the scientific method.
- Function comfortably and well in a variety of career areas and clinical settings.
- Understand the biopsychosocial model as an integral concept for clinical work.
- Recognize the needs of underserved populations.
- Learn collaborative work skills and the value of interdisciplinary efforts in patient care.
- Practice effectively with special patient populations such as children, adolescents, and the elderly, as well as patients with chronic mental illness and substance abuse.
- Develop mastery of biological treatments in the field like psychopharmacology, ECT, and adjunctive medical management.
- Obtain competence in several psychotherapies: psychodynamic, supportive, combined therapy and medication management, CBT, group, and family/couples.
- Develop flexible and adaptive approaches in applying somatic, psychological and other forms of therapy.
