Call Schedule & Moonlighting
In meeting new (2011) ACGME duty hours rules, the program was fortunate in securing additional resources to expand our residency class size, allowing the development of 3 Night Float positions; these provide much of the on-call coverage for our VCUHS Inpatient Service, VCUHS ER Psychiatry Service, and VAMC Psychiatry Service. Night Float Residents work approximately 11 hour shifts, typically for 2-4 week blocks. When NOT on Night Float, on-call psychiatry frequency is as follows:

* PGY1 call frequency is during the six months that interns spend on the inpatient psychiatry service. They do call per the off-service rotations for the remaining 6-months.
Moonlighting shifts are also available. PGY 2, 3, or 4 residents who have passed Step 3 and obtained a full Virginia medical license are eligible to do in-house moonlighting. On weekdays, moonlighters assist with adult admissions. On weekends, they may cover a Friday night psychiatry ER shift, or cover child/adolescent admissions from home. Due to INS and ACGME regulations, J-1 visa holders are ineligible to work moonlighting shifts.
Moonlighting shifts are also available. Any PGY 2, 3, or 4 who has passed Step 3 is eligible to do in-house moonlighting.
On weekdays, they cover adult admissions. On weekends, they cover child/adolescent admissions from home.
Due to ACGME regulations, J-1 visa holders are ineligible to work moonlighting shifts.
