Thank you for your interest in our Psychiatry Residency Training Program here at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System! The General Psychiatry Residency only accepts applications submitted via Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Applicant Criteria
All applicants to our program must meet the minimum criteria listed below in order to be considered for a position.
- Complete application on ERAS. Hard copies or faxed applications will not be accepted
- Must have current ECFMG Certification
- USMLE Step 1 and Step 2: Minimum scores of 78
- Must have passed TOEFL (English Exam)
- If not a U.S. citizen or holder of a green card (permanent resident), must be able/willing to obtain a J-1 Clinical Visa. This is the ONLY visa accepted at the the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System
- Documented enrollment in medical school OR involvement in direct patient care activity within the past four years
- Letter from the Dean of your medical school (Dean's Letter) and an official copy of your transcripts
- At least one letter of recommendation from a supervising psychiatrist, e.g., Department of Psychiatry Chair Person, Program Director, Medical Student Clerkship Director, or Attending Physician
- Either medical school clinical rotations or direct patient care experience in United States or Canadian hospitals for a minimum of three months. Direct patient care may include externships, but not observerships or pure clinical research.
- The above-mentioned direct patient care activity in the U.S. or Canada must be documented by a minimum of three (3) letters of recommendation from U.S. or Canadian physicians who observed your clinical work and can comment on your academic, professional and personal performance.
Interview Dates
Interviews are offered to selected applicants beginning in November. Interviews are scheduled through the beginning of February, and are offered on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. You will be contacted if you are selected, and an interview will be scheduled. Interview days are fairly structured, as each applicant will meet with a variety of faculty and residents, according to their interests.
