The Addiction Psychiatry Residency Program at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine is a 1-year training program for graduates of residency training programs in General Psychiatry.

The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine has the oldest Addiction Medicine program in the United States having been established in 1936 and been in continuous operation since. This program has served as a model program for the establishment of similar services at other academic centers. The Addiction Medicine Program merged with the Department of Psychiatry two years ago to become the Division of Addiction Psychiatry and has established an Addiction Psychiatry Residency Training Program. This program meets training requirements that can lead to subspecialty certification through the Added Qualifications in Addiction Psychiatry Examination offered by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Additionally, the program offers state-of-the-art training experiences in areas of current importance in the field of Addiction Psychiatry. Some of these experiences include buprenorphine treatment for opioid addiction, treatment of prescription narcotic abuse and dependence, research in medications development for substance use disorders and psychosocial therapies, treatment/monitoring of health professionals with addiction, and management of chronic pain syndromes in those with addiction as well as differentiation of chronic pain syndromes from addiction. The Addiction Psychiatry Residency Training Program offers a unique training experience that will introduce the psychiatrist to varied career paths including clinical addiction psychiatry, administrative addiction psychiatry, research in addiction psychiatry, and academics in addiction psychiatry.
