Acrobat Reader Download Assistance

FYI: Due to continued improvements and changes in the offerings from Adobe, it is best to view the download/installation information as presented by Adobe itself versus using the instructions provided below circa April 2004.

Adobe will present the web visitor with what it deems to be the proper version of the Adobe Reader for the operating system / language region based on the web user's computer. Note: If you're looking for a version that is either older or for another operating system, go to this address instead:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html or while on the Adobe Reader selection page click on "Choose a different version.". From there you can specify the operating system, select a version of, and language.

You may decide to exclude options such as search toolbars and other additions Adobe may offer, since they may not interest the end-user and do not hurt the functionality of the free reader if not included.

If necessary, please print these instructions before continuing. After reviewing these instructions, go to the Adobe Acrobat site to download this program.

  • After you've selected the appropriate choices, you may then click on the download button near the bottom of the screen or make any last minute revisions on selected options.

  • Depending on how the administrator of the particular computer set it up to handle saving downloads, the "save as" screen will suggest a directory to save this installation file to - per chance: c:\program files\netscape\navigator (or communicator, depending on your version of Netscape) \program\ or program\plugins. You should be able to use the drop down dialog to choose a directory of your liking. Windows users will be able to find the file with greater ease if downloaded to their "Desktop".
  • As the installation file is being saved to your hard-drive, you will see a screen indicating the status of the download procedure (45% complete, etc.). When the download is complete, this screen will disappear when using Netscape as the browser. With Internet Explorer or Mozilla, you may have to check or uncheck an option controlling whether the dialog box remains after a completed download, otherwise it too will disappear when finished.
  • Close Netscape, Mozilla, or Internet Explorer.
  • If you plan on installing Adobe Acrobat Reader, please close all other Programs. It is much safer for your computer to never install software while other programs are still running, due to conflicts and slowdowns that may occur.
  • Open Windows Explorer (or choose "Run" from the Start directory) and double-click on the name of the installation file (AdbeRdr60_enu_full.exe, rs50eng, or something like this) in the directory you choose for the file.
  • An "installation wizard" will assist you in installing the Acrobat Reader program, and it may take a long time in getting started due to built-in optimization. You may be presented with a number of installation questions, but the default options given are sufficient for the Reader installation, so simply click on the Next buttons until it has finished installing, unless you wish to alter options along the way.
  • When the installation is completed, you may need to reboot your computer before using your newly installed Reader. You will have to agree to the EULA, "End User License Agreement" in order to begin using the software. Afterwards, you may open your browser again. When you attempt to open a .pdf (portable document file), your Acrobat Reader should open automatically to let you view and print this document, elsewise check Adobe's site for troubleshooting info and tips.
