The Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department continually accepts cover letters and resumes for the positions of police officer recruit and pre-employment training. The department has 84 sworn and certified police officers serving two urban campuses and a diverse population of 50,000. The VCU Police Academy also selects and trains pre-employment candidates.

The VCU police department, a fully accredited police force, manages and operates a security force that serves VCU buildings and residence halls.

This Security Guard position provides basic security services for VCU Academic Campus housing facilities. Responsibilities include: assisting staff; students and visitors with information and directions; maintaining order; regulating and monitoring building access; monitoring CCTV security systems; responding to alarms; patrolling and inspecting facilities; notifying police officers of potential problems. Monitors pedestrian traffic in and out of buildings; checks ID's; locks and unlocks buildings; watches for and reports unsafe conditions. Assists police officers in emergencies as requested.
Hours are based on a set shift.    


Must have sophomore standing and be a current VCU student. Strong customer service skills, and ability to deal with a variety of customers and the general public. Good oral/written skills and clear, articulate speech for 2-way radio. Must pass background investigation and have a valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Must be physically able to stand and walk for extended periods. Prior experience preferred. Candidates must be able to work scheduled shift during weekends and holidays.

Patrols and inspects campuses and buildings and notifies police officers of potential problems. Monitors pedestrian traffic in and out of buildings, checks ID's, locks and unlocks buildings. Provides safety escort services to faculty, staff and visitors; watches for and reports unsafe conditions. Assists police officers in emergencies as requested.
VCU provides the opportunity to attend and complete the DCJS training.
Hours are based on a set shift.
