The Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department continually accepts cover letters and resumes for the positions of police officer recruit and pre-employment training. The department has 82 sworn and certified police officers serving two urban campuses and a diverse population of 50,000. The VCU Police Academy also selects and trains pre-employment candidates.

Provide comprehensive police services; patrol by foot bike and car; inspect facilities; investigate complaints, alarms and crimes in progress; generate field contacts, arrests and reports; Provide community policing and customer service; Handle special assignments, investigations, overtime, uniformed, traffic, plain clothed, court, administrative and investigative assignments.  
Have effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact physically and psychologically with a diverse population in stressful environments. Able to work shifts. Must complete police academy, field training and VA DCJS law enforcement certification. Have a valid Virginia driver's license, good driving record (plus points) and a clean criminal record (national). High school diploma or GED. Must provide birth certificate, complete a probationary period (1 year) and pass a drug test and a physical examination by a licensed physician at your own expense. Must have a good credit history. Several years related experience and/or college credit is preferred. Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Certification with 2 years experience is also desired.

Selection Process:
The selection process includes a preliminary interview, a full VCIN/NCIC/DMV records check, 6 letters of reference (3 business and 3 personal), fingerprint based CCRE/FBI check, psychological review, written 500 word essay, birth certificate copy required, copies of school transcripts, military DD214 copy (where applicable), citizenship check, a full physical exam by a licensed physician and a drug screen test upon job offer; the final selections are made by an oral review board.




Lateral (In-State): Must be currently working and certified as a police officer in Virginia by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Lateral (Out-of-State): Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services will evaluate your current state certification for compliance with the Commonwealth of Virginia's high standards for law enforcement training. You must be currently certified in your state.
