Know the Speed LimitsLaw enforcement agencies from across the United States are attempting to improve traffic safety in their jurisdictions, by reducing the incidence of speeding and driving while impaired (DWI), and increasing compliance with safety restraint laws and other motor vehicle codes. Although important, the effects of an enforcement program will be limited unless public awareness of the enforcement can be elevated. With the exception of a few locations, the speed limit within the VCU campus area is 25 miles per hour. The speed limit on Belvidere Street is 35 miles per hour. On West Broad Street, from the intersection at Belvidere Street westbound, the speed limit is 35 miles per hour. Beginning just east of Belvidere Street eastbound on Broad, the speed limit is 25 miles per hour. This continues into the MCV campus where the speed limit for the entire MCV campus area is 25 miles per hour. Please be aware that the VCU Police Department is enforcing the speed limits on each campus using RADAR-equipped patrol cars and motorcycles. You can learn more about traffic updates on our Traffic Update page.
Speed Measurement by Handheld RADARThe VCU Police Department uses two types of radar units. The first is the Kustom Signals Falcon handheld unit pictured here. Our radar-certified motorcycle officers utilize these particular radar sets. Drivers should be aware of the law regarding radar detectors. Virginia Code section 46.2-1079 makes it illegal to use radar detectors within the state.
Speed Measurement by Fixed RADAR The second radar set we use is the Kustom Signals Golden Eagle fixed-mount system pictured here. Radar-certified officers utilize these radar sets in patrol cars. This type of digital radar system will read vehicles approaching the patrol car as well as after they pass and they can measure speeds while the patrol car is in motion.
Reckless DriversMany drivers do not know that their speed could be considered reckless. According to Virginia Code section 46.2-862, a person shall be guilty of reckless driving who drives a motor vehicle on the highways in the Commonwealth (i) at a speed of twenty miles per hour or more in excess of the applicable maximum speed limit where the applicable speed limit is thirty miles per hour or less, (ii) at a speed of sixty miles per hour or more where the applicable maximum speed limit is thirty-five miles per hour, (iii) at a speed of twenty miles per hour or more in excess of the applicable maximum speed limits where the applicable maximum speed limit is forty miles per hour or more, or (iv) in excess of eighty miles per hour regardless of the applicable maximum speed limit. If you witness a reckless driver within the VCU community, call the VCU Police at 828-1196 to report it.
Buckle Up VirginiaVirginia has seat belt laws. For your safety, your child's safety, and the safety of others, buckle up. VCU Police officers look for violations of the seat belt law during traffic stops. Know the law. You may refer to the DMV FAQ for answers to any questions.
If There's An Accident on CampusIf you become involved in an auto accident on campus, stay calm. Dial 828-1196 or use an ERTS phone and report it to the VCU Police Department. An officer will respond to take a report. If there are any injuries involved, notify the dispatcher of such so that they can have Emergency Medical Services respond as well. |
