The VCU Police Emergency Communications Center, under the supervision of the Division of Support Services of the VCU Police Department, is located at 938 West Grace Street. Anyone may call 828-1234 (emergency), 828-1196 (non-emergency), by ERTS, or come in-person, 24 hours a day, to report emergency or non-emergency needs. Our staff members are always willing to help.

A minimum of four communications officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing communications support to the department and the community. They effectively answer all calls for service and coordinate the efforts of the Security Escort Service and Police Officers, all of whom are monitored and dispatched throughout each shift.

Communications Officers are fully trained and are national and state certified professional telecommunicators. State-of-the-art computer systems allow the staff to speak with a complainant while the call is simultaneously being dispatched to police for assistance. Your calls are important and we are available to serve you.

When calling for service or an emergency, please help the call taker help you by following these guidelines:

Be prepared to state:

  • WHERE you are calling from.
  • WHAT is the nature of your call.
  • WHEN the event actually occurred.
  • WHO you actually are with your name.

There are 152 of these phones located at various areas throughout each campus. They connect directly with the VCU Police Department Emergency Communications Center. Most of them have a flashing yellow strobe light above them. In some buildings, they are red wall phones.

Employees and students can swipe their VCU Card, the universal campus identification card, into readers at designated building entrances. A magnetic card identifies users and allows the encoded reader to open the door only to individuals with proper authority. The VCU Police Emergency Communications Center monitors these readers. Please feel free to read the VCU Building Access Control Policy.

The Emergency Communications Center is also a general information center for the University. The Communications Officers provide directions, bus schedules, campus events and other miscellaneous information to the community. Remember that the VCU Police Emergency Number is 828-1234 or VCU-HELP (828-4357). The VCU Police Non-Emergency Number is 828-1196 or VCU-COPS (828-2677). Escort Service is 828-WALK (828-9255).
