I am very
sorry and sad to hear of the loss of Dr. Martin. I was a student in the
Department of Pharmacology/Toxicology in the late 1980's and enjoyed Dr.
Martin's fun personality as well as his excellent scientific skills. He
will be missed! Sincerely,

To the
Family of Billy Ray Martin: Please accept my deepest sympathy at the
loss of Billy Ray, a wonderfully inspiring individual. I worked in the
School of Medicine Dean's Office and had frequent contact with Billy. He
was a truly outstanding person who inspired generations of students and
faculty. As chair of pharmacology/toxicology, he was the best of the
best. I was fortunate to have an opportunity to meet with Billy on May
1, shortly before my retirement from VCU. He was amazingly upbeat and
strong. I told him that he was an inspiration to all of us and that I
would never forget him. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I remember
how easy it was to talk to Dr. Martin after class, back when I was a
graduate student, and how approachable he always has been. I enjoyed my
years working and collaborating with him and his research group. My
sincere sympathies to all his family.

I was
privileged to not only know Bill, but to have him as my brother-in-law
for the last 3 & 1/2 decades. There was no finer brother, son, husband,
father, or friend than Bill Martin. He fulfilled my wish for an older
brother spectacularly. His gentleness, sense of humor, spirit for life,
his wisdom, and his courage will inspire me for the rest of my days.
Life will never be the same for my family without him.....but we are
sooooo glad to have had him around for as long as we did. We will miss
him forever. Joy and Greg Lukens

I was a
technician/student in the Pharm/tox department for 9 years. I got to
know Dr. Martin very well. He had the rare gift of being an outstanding
scientist and intellectual but at the same time a truly caring person
who understood people, always acting compasssionately and with a sense
of humor. I hope he knew what a role model he is for me. The world has
lost a great man. My sincere condolences to his family.

Jean, Zach
and Lindsay, Angela and I were profoundly saddened to hear of Billy’s
death. He was one of my closest friends in CPDD and ACNP and I so
enjoyed talking with him and the many dinners we shared alone and with
you and he as couple with Angela and I. He had a warmth and sense of
caring which was astonishing aside from the fact that he was a superb
scientist with great modesty about his considerable accomplishments.
Obviously the scientific field will be dimished by his absence, but this
pales into insignificance when compared to the personal loss Angela and
I feel for a decent, sweet man. I can say nothing to ease the pain, but
he and you are in our prayers.

My
condolences and heart goes out to you Mrs. Martin, Zack and Lindsay. Dr.
Martin will be truly be missed around the department (Pharmacology). He
was a wonderful boss and friend, for 32 years. I really enjoyed working
with him.
God saw you
were getting tired, A cure was not to be.
He put his arms around you, A whispered "COME WITH ME".
A golden heart stopped beating, Two tired hands laid to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
You will be in my prayers.

Georganna
and I were greatly saddened to hear the news of Dr. Martin’s passing
from Dave. Billy Ray’s skills and abilities as a scientist are, of
course, well known. His many awards and achievements will forever
document his vast contributions to the field.
As one of his many students, I would like to underscore his superb
skills as a teacher and mentor. Although he always provided the perfect
guidance and left little doubt about the correct course of action, his
demeanor was always gentle and left no doubt that he was, at his core, a
kind soul.
Our deepest sympathy to Jean and the family. Please know that his
extended family, his students and the Department, will miss him greatly
and our thoughts and prayers are with you

I am deeply
saddened to hear about the passing of Dr. Martin. He was certainly an
iconic figure both in the department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and
the cannabinoid field. Dr. Martin truly had a great love for scientific
discovery and it showed in his mentoring. I count myself lucky to have
had many enlightening scientific discussions with him as a student and
as a principal investigator. Dr Martin had a warm gentle spirit but also
the decisiveness of a leader; he knew when you needed a push in the
right direction. He cared about his students and was highly respected by
many. Dr. Martin was an inspiration to me and will be greatly missed.

I am so
very saddened to learn of Bill's passing. I have so many fond memories
of Bill from my years as his neighbor across the street. He was such a

and friend and I enjoyed the many years I shared at his home, playing
with Lindsay and Zach and later babysitting them. It doesn't seem real
that he is gone and it is definitely too soon.
I pray that
your family will find peace in knowing he is now without pain and has
gone on to a wonderful place. He was blessed to have such a wonderful

Billy was
truly one of the good guys. As campus administrative staff I worked with
him on various matters over a number of years, and my husband Randy was
a tech in his research group even longer ago. Whether advocating for his
department, faculty and staff, mentoring students (and employees), or
just exchanging pleasantries in the parking lot, Billy was enormously
effective, supportive, respectful, fair and kind. Both of us are
profoundly grateful to have known and worked with him and extend our
deepest sympathy to his family. We're so sorry for your loss.

I met Dr.
Martin on my VCU interview, and the opportunity to work with such a kind
and outstanding scientist was one of the things that brought me to
Richmond. Throughout my time here, Dr. Martin served on my graduate
committee, and I met with him on a number of occasions, mostly when I
was in need of guidance or advice. I will never forget his fierce
loyalty to his students, his soft-spoken yet direct demeanor, and his
willingness to take time out from his busy schedule to help people in
any way that he could. I specifically remember him calling me out of
class one day to tell me about a last-minute travel award opportunity!
He is truly an inspiration and was a father-like figure to many. My
sincere condolences to the Martin family.

It was a
shock to receive the news of Billy's untimely death. Having recently
lost my wife of 45 years to cancer, I can well appreciate what you have
gone through during the long months of Billy's illness, and how you must
feel, now that he is gone. Words at this time are meaningless. However,
as time passes and you reread the outpouring of respect, admiration, and
love, that is so evident in this guest book, I hope this will give you
solace and support. My first meeting with Billy and you, Jean, was
through the AMSPC, when you first attended our annual meeting. I was
immediately impressed by Billy's friendly and warm demeanor, his
positivity, and his charm. I was subsequently pleased to see how rapidly
he became a contributing and valuable member of the Association. He will
be sorely missed. Be strong.

To the

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On behalf
of myself and my wife, I would like to offer our condolences to the
Martin family. I was a student in the Department in the 1990's, and I
met my future wife (Jennifer Slemmer) while she was conducting research
with Dr. Martin and Dr. Damaj. I too, as another student has pointed
out, still have my notes from Dr. Martin's receptor theory lectures.
Nobody taught it better. I now teach drugs of abuse to pharmacy and
graduate students, and always present work conducted over the many years
by Dr. Martin. I am always so proud to be able to tell the students that
I was educated in the same department that Dr. Martin was instrumental
in building. Jenn and I often discuss how lucky we were, and still are,
to be members of that departmental community. As demonstrated on this
message board, it is a sense of community that continues to live on, and
will certainly do so with the memory of Dr. Martin.
John
Weber (St. John's, NF)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My deepest
sympathy to the Martin family and the MCV Pharmacology Department. I
always admired Billy's science, his devotion to teaching and his ability
to run such a successful department. I had the priviledge of working
with him on several alumni projects and was very proud of his
accomplishments. He will be missed by all those lives he touched.

I was an
ordinary graduate student in the Department in the 1999. I always
remember how approachable he always has been by many of his students. To
us, he was not only a prominent scientist nationwide but also a very
friendly and wonderfully kind teacher easy to talk to.
I
personally still remember the moment that backs in 2001, when I was very
nervous to give my first seminar in the department and as a department
chair, Unexpectedly he came to me with encouragement and said, “It’s a
very good seminar”. I was very touched by his kindness and gained a lot
confidence from it. I am deeply saddened by your loss and please send my
sincere condolences to all his family. I believe that He will be missed
by all those lives he touched.

Billy's
scientific legacy reaches far and wide internationally. He was an
inspirational colleague with whom I enjoyed many discussions at past
ICRS meetings. I have a great video snippet of an interview with Billy
that I use in my teaching - it will be bittersweet viewing now. My
sincere condolences to the family at your loss.

It came as
a great shock to me to hear that Billy Martin passed away. I was one of
the many that was fortunate enough to have received his encouragement
and support. Despite being a new faculty member in a different
department he and others in Pharmacology helped out my family when no
one else would. I can only imagine the loss felt by his family. His loss
will not be soon forgotten.

To my
beloved cousin's family. Billy was an inspiration to me as a child
growing up. I always admired the qualities that made Billy who he was!
If you were highly educated or not so highly educated, Billy always
showed you the same respect, he never belittled anyone! My wife Lois and
I feel priviliged to have known him! And we'll all get to see him again
one day over on Heaven's shore! May God bless and keep you, Jean and the
rest of the family!

My deepest
sympathy to Dr. Martin's family. I was a graduate student in the early
80's when Zach and Lindsay were little tikes - his pride and joy! He
will be missed but always remembered as a man with a heart of gold. I
thank him and honor him for his contribution to my world and our world.

Dear Jean,
only today did I learn of Bill's death. I am most saddened by your loss
and that of your sons. Once again, as has been the case since Chapel
Hill, I was wanted to ask Bill for his assistance with a scientific
problem. As so many others have said before me, he was always willing to
help and always with good advice and humor. I will truly miss him, our
occasional meetings at national conventions, and his chuckle. My deep
regrets to you and the family, Herm Lilja

I am deeply
sorry to learn of Dr. Martin's passing. Upon joining the department in
1997 as a lab tech and student, I quickly learned of the central and
pivotal role he played as a researcher and teacher. I enjoyed his
lectures on receptor pharmacology and the advice and guidance he
provided on opioid and cannabinoid research. My thoughts go out to his
family, friends and colleagues.
