A child's health-care encounters can be a positive growth experience
when truly comprehensive care is given. Such comprehensive care
by definition includes child life services staffed by appropriately
educated and trained personnel. Interruption of normal life experiences
can jeopardize growth and development. Physical limitations of
illness and health care encounters have the potential to invite
dependency and can erode self-esteem. Compared to the general
population, children and adolescents in health care settings are
more likely to have previously experienced excessive social, familial
and environmental stress. Anxiety and stress related to illness,
separation, hospitalization and medical encounters interfere with
a child's optimal response to medical treatment and care. The
Department of Pediatrics strives to offer the best support services
and resources for its patients, making the health care experience
a positive one.
