A resident's life
Camaraderie and teamwork are important qualities of our resident program. They provide an environment that promotes confidence and personal growth. The friendships forged at work continue to develop outside the hospital. Social activities organized by the residents include family picnics, ice-skating parties, nature outings, intramural sports teams and visiting Paramount’s King’s Dominion and Busch Gardens — two nearby theme parks.
The department holds an annual retreat at each level of residency.
Early each year, the PL-1 retreat promotes trust among new interns with fun, team-building activities.
The PL-2s are provided with a half-day transitional seminar, which gives the resident new insight on how to teach and gather effective feedback, how to run a team, how to apply for a fellowship and how to look for a job. The PL-2s also participate in a career-planning day that features guest speakers discussing community practice types, academic career paths, job hunting, applying and interviewing, contract negotiation and financial planning. The PL-2 seminar also helps prepare residents for the leadership and teaching responsibilities of their senior year.
The PL-3s are provided with a half-day transitional seminar, which gives the resident new insight on how to teach and gather effective feedback, how to be a team senior, how to look for a job and prepare for the boards. The year-end PL-3 retreat is a fun day that residents get to choose an activity to relax and enjoy each other’s company prior to graduation.
Other special events sponsored by the department include the department holiday party, the department welcome party for new interns and faculty, the chiefs welcome party for new interns, and the much-anticipated house staff party at the end of the year, during which our attendings take in-house call to relieve the residents of all responsibilities.
