Residency spotlight
VCU has trained me well for
my career as a pediatrician. After completing my residency
at VCU, I spent one year practicing general pediatrics with
a small
community
group. I attended high-risk deliveries and took care of
patients with a variety of illnesses — both the common
and the uncommon. My training had provided me with excellent
preparation
for practicing
pediatrics in that setting. However, I soon realized that
I missed the academic environment that I had left behind
at VCUMC, so
I returned as an assistant professor in general pediatrics
and assistant
recruitment director for the residency program.
Here I enjoy the opportunity to work closely with the residents.
In addition, the university setting offers me the ability to continue
the learning process with access to multiple pediatric subspecialists.
Beyond the wonderful education, one of the main reasons I love
the pediatric residency program at VCU is the people. The residents
are a cohesive group, and they enjoy working with the faculty and
staff as well as each other. The faculty and staff are very dedicated
to the residents and are wonderful people with whom to work.
VCU Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics provides
a well-balanced atmosphere in both general and subspecialty pediatrics.
No matter what career choice one makes, this program will provide
superb training. I feel very fortunate to have been able to train
here and continue my career surrounded by such intelligent and
caring health care providers.
