Message from the interim chairman
After 24 years of dedication to the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at MCV/VCU, I am excited to lead the Virginia Commonwealth University Children’s Medical Center as the newly appointed interim chairman of the Department of Pediatrics. It is an honor to work with a team that is devoted to providing child- and family-centered comprehensive pediatric health care, educational experiences in all aspects of pediatric medicine and research initiatives that influence the lives of children in our community and beyond.
Our pediatric team consists of a comprehensive network of nurses, intensivists, primary care physicians, specialists, researchers, surgeons, residents and ancillary medical staff; all trained specifically to care for children. With more than 100,000 patient visits a year, VCU Children’s has expanded its faculty by seven physicians and two nurse practitioners to accommodate the growing needs of our community’s children. As in past years, Richmond Magazine has recently named a number of our doctors “Top Docs for Kids,” and several are listed in the recent “Best Doctors in America” publication.
Celebrating the 80th anniversary of pediatrics at MCV/VCU, we continue to advance in our clinical and research initiatives. Many new clinics and programs have recently been established including:
- Child Health Advocacy Program (CHAP), legal assistance program
- Children’s Health Learning and Development NICU Follow-Up Program (CHiLD)
- Helping Children of Adult Patients (HCAP), run by pediatric palliative care and child life for children of adult patients who are in critical condition
- International Adoption Medical Clinic (IAMC)
- Lactation Clinic
- Pediatric Palliative Care and Pain Management
- Sports Medicine Clinic
This year celebrates the 30th anniversary of our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and the tertiary care provided by our team of specialists. With the October 2008 opening of the Critical Care Hospital, our state of the art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will continue to help ever-smaller babies survive and thrive with the use of cutting-edge techniques such as ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and surfactant replacement, in a new family-centered, private room environment. Our pediatric endocrinology, cardiology and gastroenterology services continue to provide cutting-edge clinical care on campus and at satellite clinics. And yes, we remain committed to the construction of a new facility dedicated to comprehensive pediatric health care.
As you will see throughout our Web site, at VCU Children’s a patient, family member, resident, medical student or community physician can find the most comprehensive pediatric resources in central Virginia. I look forward to working with members of the medical community, patients and families in my new role.
Best regards,

Bill Moskowitz, MD, FAAP, FACC, FSCAI
