Main
Hospital
1250 E. Marshall St.
Richmond, VA 23298
The pediatric inpatient service located on the
sixth, seventh and eighth floors of the 536-bed Main Hospital
at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, encompasses
approximately 3,500 pediatric admissions and 3,000 births yearly.
This modern facility contains 140 pediatric beds and bassinets.
Pediatric and surgical services utilize the child friendly environment
for the care of pediatric patients. In contrast to the first year
pediatric resident who is only responsible for medical admissions,
the PL-3 resident, in consultative capacity, supervises the care
of all pediatric medical and surgical patients.

The NICU
The Newborn Services at the Children's Medical Center provide care for infants
born at the VCU Medical Centers MCV Hospitals and for many sick newborn
infants transferred from other regional medical facilities. The sixth floor of
Main houses the 32-bed Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU), adjacent to the labor
and delivery suites. In the NICU, the infants triage into two separate areas:
one for critically ill, postoperative, and ventilator-assisted infants and another
for recuperating infants and growing premature babies. A laboratory for chemistry
and blood gases on ultra-micro blood samples operates in the NICU. A 25-bed well-baby
nursery located on the eighth floor, adjacent to the obstetrical post-partum
units provides an excellent environment for teaching newborn care. The NICU team
of a PL-3, PL-2, and PL-1 residents is supervised by full-time neonatology faculty
members. Residents attend all high-risk deliveries and cesarean sections in the
nearby labor and delivery suites.

The seventh floor
The seventh floor of Main Hospital, with its 63 beds, comprises
the general patient care area and is divided into working units
according to the age of the patient. Each patient care team includes
one PL-3 (team leader) and several PL-1 residents, and a group
of four to six third-year medical students. All patient care,
including any necessary procedures, is provided by the PL-1 resident
and assigned students. PL-3 residents supervise a comprehensive
program of teaching during work rounds, attending rounds, and
health team conferences. Patient care and teaching are enriched
and guided by the attending faculty.
The seventh floor also contains on-call rooms, a large conference
room and two team rooms used for didactic teaching. Each nursing
station contains computer terminals, which allow for access and
rapid retrieval of patient information. Located on this floor
are school rooms for inpatients, occupational therapy offices,
family waiting rooms, the chief resident's office, a playroom
and play deck. The seventh floor is now being painted in colorful
pastels and jungle murals, creating a child-friendly environment.
