2924 Brook Road
Richmond, VA 23220
Children's Hospital, which is located four miles
north of VCU Medical Center, is an independently supported facility
oriented toward rehabilitation of children from birth through
adolescence. Attending and consulting staff members at Children's
Hospital maintain faculty appointments in the Department of Pediatrics.
There are an average of 600 inpatient admissions and approximately
23,000 outpatient visits annually. The majority of these children
are on the specialized surgical services: orthopaedics, plastic
surgery, otolaryngology, ophthalmology and dentistry. In addition,
inpatient and outpatient programs for the diagnosis and treatment
of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue diseases,
hemophilia, nonsurgical handicapping conditions, sequela of birth
defects, cerebral palsy, endocrine disorders, lead poisoning,
neuromuscular, developmental disorders and infant intervention
complete the child-centered program. The transitional care unit
has been established at Children's Hospital designed to help
NICU graduates and other chronically ill patients receive rehabilitative
and maintenance care outside of an acute hospital setting.
Emphasis is on the comprehensive management of patients with
extensive participation from the VCU departments of Physical
Therapy, Occupational
Therapy, Recreational Therapy, Psychology and the School of
Social Work.
