Here are just a few examples of private donations providing the Children’s Medical Center with resources that “margin of excellence” all central Virginians want from the hospital caring for their children at their time of greatest need.

* The Food Lion, Inc. Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: A $1 million dollar gift from Food Lion, Inc. was matched with other funding to completely renovate the 12-bed unit housed on the 7th Floor of Main Hospital. The focus of this renovation was to create a family friendly environment that will accommodate the needs of families with the most ill and seriously injured children and help speed the recovery of our patients.

* Professorships that Attract and Retain Expert Physicians: The Jessie Ball duPont, Edwin L. Kendig, Jr. and Walter E. Bundy, Jr. Professorships funded with private gifts have enabled the Department of Pediatrics to attract and retain the very best physicians to the Children’s Medical Center.

* Child Life Program: The Child Life program receives numerous gifts each year from those in our community who want to help make a hospital experience easier for children. Gifts include gift cards, monetary donations and even sponsorship of special events.

* Dogs on call: Private gifts established a program through Child Life that brings trained dogs to pediatric patients to provide comfort for children during their hospital stay.

* Reach out and Read: In 1999, the Department received funds to establish this national early literacy program offering age appropriate books to children 6 months - 5 years who are admitted to the Pediatric Emergency Room at MCVH. As an inner city teaching hospital that accepts all patients regardless of their ability to pay, most at-risk pediatric patients needing emergency care come to MCVH. Health care providers in the ER have been trained to discuss literacy and demonstrate developmentally appropriate parent-book-child interaction. Since May 2000, more than 9,000 books have been distributed.

* Student Scholarships and Housestaff Awards: Medical students graduate with debts as high as $100,000 or more. Generous donations have established two scholarships for students pursing pediatrics as a career. In addition, an alumnus of the Department’s fellowship program has established a research award for housestaff/fellows to encourage scientific research in childhood illnesses.

The Medical College of Virginia Foundation, Inc. is a 501© 3 organization whose mission is to inspire and steward philanthropy throughout the VCU Health System and the MCV Campus. The Children’s Medical Center Fund is a restricted fund within the MCV Foundation providing support for the Children’s Medical Center at VCU Health System.

Chairman’s Circle recognizes leadership gifts to the Children’s Medical Center Fund at the $1,000 and above level. Annual gifts at this level have the same impact as a $20,000 endowment.

Friends of Child Health recognizes gifts to the Children’s Medical Center Fund up to $1,000. The majority of our gifts are under $1,000 given by people from all walks of like who care about improving the health of children.
