Anesthesiology
The Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology provides the only dedicated
24/7 Pediatric Anesthesia call team in the community. Each member
of the division is fellowship trained and all have considerable
experience in managing pediatric surgical patients.
Members of the division care for neonates, infants, and small
children with emergency or complex surgical needs. We also participate
in the Children’s Heart Center Program with the only dedicated
Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology team in the Central Virginia
area. The division also provides sedation services to as many
as fifteen sites outside of the operating theaters within the
VCU Health System. Our skilled division members also participate
in numerous “medical missions” throughout the year
to care for pediatric patients in other countries.

Pediatric Dentistry
Dental disease is the most common chronic illness of childhood, affecting 58 percent of all children. VCUMC Pediatric Dentistry provides comprehensive oral health care and dental services to children. Services range from regular outpatient checkups and treatment to hospital consultations, dental surgery, emergency room intervention and care for children with special health needs.

Dermatology
Dermatologists at the Children’s Medical Center provide
diagnosis and treatment of chronic and acute disorders with special
interest in acne, atopic eczema, vascular malformations and hereditary
and/or congenital skin diseases in children.

Emergency Medicine
As the only Level One Trauma Center in the area, the Children’s
Medical Center ER is a premier site for the evaluation, treatment,
and expert care of children who have experienced severe and life
threatening injuries. Our multidisciplinary ER team comprises
surgeons, physicians, nurses, social workers and physical and
occupational therapists.
The VCUHS Pediatric Transport Team and the VCULifeEvac helicopter
enable the rapid air transfer of patients requiring immediate
interventions. Most air-transport patients suffer from head-trauma,
neurological or respiratory failure/arrest. The pediatric transport
team also cares for patients suffering from everything from animal
bites to severe burns. With its multidisciplinary team approach
and ability to perform air transports, the Pediatric Emergency
Room serves as a hub for transports from regional hospitals and
beyond.

Human Genetics
The Genetic Program seeks to address families’ concerns
about their children’s special health care needs, birth
defects and inherited conditions. A genetics consultation includes
a review of medical records, family history and a detailed physical
exam. All families receive counseling and written information
with follow up describing their child’s genetic issues.
Patients are often referred to the division for evaluation of
and comprehensive services for failure-to-thrive, developmental
delay, neurological symptoms, recurrent vomiting, hypoglycemia,
hyperammonemia and metabolic acidosis. The division currently
has an interest in genetic hearing loss and has NIH funded research
to study genes causing hereditary deafness.

Care Connection for Children
Central Virginia Care Connection for Children (CCC) provides
individualized care coordination for Virginia’s children
with chronic or physically disabling healthcare needs. The Title
V funded program, in partnership with the Department of Health,
provides care coordination, insurance assistance, community resources
information and referral assistance free of charge to children
under the age of 21.
Care Coordinators connect families with:
· Local health care providers who have expertise with children
with special health care needs
· Specialized health insurance programs
· School programs and services
· Other families experiencing similar situations
· Ongoing help in coordinating specialty care and accessing
services
· Help with understanding and using their health insurance
benefits

Child Neurology
The VCUHS Department of Child Neurology provides comprehensive
evaluation of and follow-through care for all neurological problems.
Services are available for children with neurological problems
ranging from seizures and developmental delay to Attention Deficit
Disorder and severe headaches.

Child Psychiatry/Psychology
The VCUHS Department of Psychiatry’s Division of Child
Psychiatry has a state of the art child psychiatry facility that
provides
services for short-term, inpatient, residential, day treatment
and outpatient care to children and adolescents. The physicians
also serve hearing-impaired children with mental health needs
and provide specialty child psychiatry clinics in Developmental
Disabilities, ADHD, and Mood Disorders that require a multidisciplinary
approach.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
The Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program at the VCU Children’s Medical Center serves children and adolescents in need of rehabilitation due to trauma, disease, surgery or congenital disability. The program offers levels of treatment that range from comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation care, day patient and outpatient services provided by a team of pediatric experts and led by pediatric physical and rehabilitation physicians. Follow-up care and consultative services are available in surrounding community hospitals and the Outpatient Center at Children’s Hospital, located at 2924 Brook Road in Richmond, Va.

Radiology
Three certified pediatric radiologists, providing consultation
and interpretation of all aspects of pediatric imaging, including
24-hour call coverage for emergencies in children, cover the Department
of Pediatrics’ Division of Radiology.
The division currently is developing a project involving chest
X-ray roles in the evaluation of severity of bronchial asthma.
Radiology services at the Children’s Medical Center currently
include MRI and CAT scanning, radiation therapy, ultrasound, x-ray
and other techniques for diagnostic examinations of infants and
children
