School Nurse Institute Partnership (SNIP)
Overview
The School Nurse Institute Partnership (SNIP) is a statewide committee
that was organized in 1998 by a steering committee of representatives
from the Partnership for People with Disabilities (then the Virginia
Institute for Developmental Disabilities), and the Virginia Departments
of Education and Health. This committee determined that a public-private
partnership should be formed with school nurses and school- nursing
groups, as well as with institutions of higher education, to enhance
and coordinate school nursing-related education activities throughout
Virginia. SNIP currently is comprised of school nurses, representatives
from the Virginia Association of School Nurses, the Virginia Departments
of Education and Health, the Virginia Emergency Medical Services for
Children Project, and six university schools of nursing. SNIP is coordinated
at the Partnership for People with Disabilities. SNIP members meet periodically
to discuss the educational needs of school nurses. SNIP is unique in
that nurses in practice and education who are interested in promoting
continuing education for school nurses collaborate to meet this need.
Programs that SNIP has coordinated in the past include Managing School
Emergencies I, II, and II, Legal Issues in School Health Practice, and
the Role of the School Nurse on the IEP Team. Most recently, SNIP has
coordinated the Disaster Preparedness for School Nurses Workshops. Specific
training events are funded by registration fees and specific contracts.
Major Activities
- Assess the learning needs of school nursing personnel
- Coordinate the provision of continuing education for school nurses
