for Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Overview:
The Technical Assistance Center for Children Who Are Deaf or Hard
of Hearing is funded by the
Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to provide training and technical
assistance in the area of hearing impairment and deafness. Assistance
is available to local public school systems as well as early intervention
and preschool programs through the Virginia Network of Consultants for
Professionals Working with Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (VNOC) in areas such as: identification, assessment (educational, psychological), communication competency of students, educators and interpreters in
the spectrum of modalities (auditory-verbal, bilingual-bicultural, American
Sign Language, etc.), auditory-oral needs of students with cochlear
implants, instructional strategies and amplification.
Major Activities:
- Management and coordination of consultations carried out by the
Virginia Network of Consultants for Professionals Working with Children
Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (VNOC)
- Regional trainings in See-the Sound Visual Phonics©, as well
as awareness, intermediate and tailored professional development in the area of hearing
impairment and deafness
- Coordination of annual professional development in auditory-aural strategies for teaching students who are deaf/hard of hearing and communicate through listening and spoken language
- Revision and annual update of Virginia Department of Education's (VDOE) Guidelines for Working with Students Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in Virginia Public Schools
- Coordination of the annual statewide conference on education of students
who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Collaboration on Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Priority Projects
