The Technical Assistance Center
for Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Overview:
The Technical Assistance Center for Children Who Are Deaf or Hard
of Hearing, formerly known as the PREP Project (Providing Resources
and Education to Professionals for working with infants and children
who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families) is funded by the
Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to provide training and technical
assistance in the area of hearing impairment and deafness. Assistance
is available to local public school systems as well as early intervention
and preschool programs through the Virginia Network of Consultants
(VNOC) for
Professionals Working with Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Training and consultation can be provided in areas such as: assessment (educational, psychological, speech/language), communication competency of students, educators and interpreters in
the spectrum of modalities (auditory-verbal, bilingual-bicultural, American
Sign Language, etc.), best practices in instruction, auditory-oral needs of students with cochlear
implants and amplification.
Major Activities:
- Management and coordination of consultations carried out by the
Virginia Network of Consultants for Professionals Working with Children
Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (VNOC)
- Regional trainings in See-the Sound Visual Phonics©, as well
as awareness, intermediate and tailored trainings in the area of hearing
impairment and deafness
- Collaboration with the VDOE Enhanced Scope and Sequence Plus Project
- Revision and subsequent roll-out trainings on VDOE's Guidelines
for Working with Students Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in VA Public
Schools
- Coordination of an annual statewide conference on education of students
who are deaf or hard of hearing
