Disability / Advocacy
Voting & Power
People with disabilities number approximately 58 million Americans.
They represent the nation's largest minority group. However, nearly
½ of all eligible voters with disabilities are not registered
to vote. Find out more.
Virginia Board for People with Disabilities (VBPD)
VBPD serves as Virginia's Developmental Disabilities (DD) Planning
Council. DD Councils are in every state and territory of the United
States. They work for the benefit of individuals with developmental
disabilities and their families to identify needs and help develop policies,
programs and services that will meet these needs in a manner that respects
dignity and independence. Its mission is to enrich the lives of Virginians
with disabilities by providing a VOICE for their concerns. Click

Virginia Office for Protection and Advocacy (VOPA)
The Virginia Office for Protection and Advocacy (VOPA) helps with disability-related
problems like abuse, neglect, and discrimination. We also help people
with disabilities obtain services and treatment. All callers receive
help with these problems. Individuals with problems, targeted in our
program goals, may also receive advocacy services and/or legal representation.
Our mission is to employ zealous and effective advocacy and legal representation
to: protect and advance legal, human, and civil rights of persons with
disabilities; combat and prevent abuse, neglect, and discrimination;
and promote independence, choice, and self-determination by persons
with disabilities. Click here for more information.
