High School
- Invite a Wounded Warrior to the school to talk during an assembly how now having a disability has impacted their life (ensure the message is respectful) www.dvs.virginia.gov/woundedwarrior_contactus.htm
- Sponsor an event where ‘vendors’ can set up displays in halls (local support groups, adapted sports groups, Very Special Arts, technology vendors, etc.)
- Post interesting disability facts, pictures and biographies of people with disabilities or a disability history timeline on bulletin boards in the hallways. www.museumofdisability.org/society_timeline.asp
- Have a different student with a disability post a blog on the school’s website each day of October (answering a specific question)
- Hold a “fun facts” contest each week (ask a question related to disabilities and have students submit answers. The first person with the correct answer gets a prize) Disability Awareness Packet for Lesson Plans on these specific disabilities in the classroom
- Get student government involved in promoting activities during October (develop a banner that is displayed out front or in the office of the school that speaks to disability pride, disability etiquette, etc.)
- Have a student read a biography of someone famous with a disability during morning announcements each week during the month of October
- Have comedians and motivational speakers with disabilities come to schools to talk about their disability (for example, Brett Leake ( www.brettleake.com) is a national comedian who lives in Virginia. James Rothrock www.vadrs.org/commish.htm is the commissioner of the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services
