Elementary School
- Invite Kids on the Block puppet show to the Elementary School Contact Kids on the Block or call Kelly Hickok at the Richmond Resources for Independent Living at (804) 353-6503.
- Bring service animals to schools for an assembly. Contact The Seeing Eye, Incfor more information.
- Have a movie night each Friday night in the gymnasium that features an empowering movie that the whole community is invited to (could be made into a PTA fundraiser). Movies that could be shown include, but are not limited to:
- Rain Man
- Radio
- I am Sam
- Forrest Gump
- Children of a Lesser God
- Charly
- Beautiful Mind
- My Left Foot
- The Other Sister
- What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
- The Boy Who Could Fly
- Mercury Rising
- Have therapists talk to classes about what they do and why with students with disabilities
- Post interesting disability facts, pictures and biographies of people with disabilities or a disability history timeline on bulletin boards in the hallways. www.museumofdisability.org/society_timeline.asp
- Have students create posters to raise awareness about disabilities and hold a contest (winner gets a prize). www.glogster.com for creating electronic posters
- Have a student read a biography of someone famous with a disability during morning announcements each week during the month of October
