Disability History and Awareness Month?

Advocates with disabilities got out of their wheelchairs and climbed up the steps of the United States Capitol in Washington, D. C. in 1990 to support the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 - 1945) was the 32nd President of the United States who contracted polio at age 39.
Judith Heumann was a cofounder of the World Institute on Disability and was the assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Education in the Clinton administration.
President George H. W. Bush signing the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990; Justin Dart, Jr (in the hat) was a legendary American activist and advocate for people with disabilities.
Ed Roberts (1939-1995) was a founder of the University of California’s Physically Disabled Students Program, which became the model for Berkeley's Center for Independent Living (CIL) and for the over 400 CILs now established across the country.
Chester Finn currently serves as Chairperson of the national Self Advocates Becoming Empowered (SABE) organization and as the Special Assistant with the New York State Office for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
Virginia State Epileptic Colony – now the Central Virginia Training Center in Lynchburg, VA.  Over 400 residents still live in this institution for people with disabilities.
