Richmond Infant Council (RIC)

Overview
This project coordinates the city of Richmond's interagency activities for Part C of the individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) - early intervention services for infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families. Activities focus on implementing comprehensive, family-centered early intervention services through the work of the Richmond Infant Council (RIC), an interagency body comprised of families, public agencies, and local public and private service providers. A priority of the RIC is child find. ( Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, through the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services.)

Major Activities

  • Provide staff support for the Richmond Infant Council in implementing the city of Richmond's Part C early intervention program
  • Serve as the central point of entry for the city's early intervention system
  • Provide limited temporary service coordination to families entering the city's early intervention system
  • Provide information and resources for families and professionals about available community services
  • Organize, conduct, and evaluate child find efforts for Richmond residents (0-36 months)
  • Provide training and technical assistance for early intervention providers and families
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluation activities related to the implementation of the city's early intervention program
  • Implement the council's funding for early intervention direct services and family support funding on a child-by-child basis
  • Maintain accurate information about children receiving early intervention services in the city of Richmond
