Positive Behavioral Support (PBS)

Positive Behavior Support initiatives are designed to provide training to collaborative teams of individuals, family members, educators, providers, and other community members who support individuals with disabilities who exhibit challenging behavior. The Partnership for People with Disabilities' primary PBS initiative is a matchmaker companion to the Together We Can project and provides training and technical assistance to children (birth to 22) who have dual sensory impairments (deafblindness). (Funded jointly by the US Department of Education and the Virginia Department of Education.)

Major Activities

  • Provide training in positive strategies to teams that include the student, family members, educators, and others who provide support
  • Plan and conduct (or co-sponsor with others) workshops and training events on positive behavioral support issues
  • Offer training and consultation to Training and Technical Assistance Centers (T/TACs), Interagency Coordinating Councils (ICCs), and other agencies addressing the needs of children and youth with challenging behaviors and significant disabilities
  • Provide individual consultation to students with deafblindness who have challenging behaviors
  • Link with other initiatives that support positive behavioral support efforts
