Making a Difference... One Child At a Time

Overview
The mission of this program is to improve the success, in the community, of youth with educational disabilities who become involved with the juvenile justice system. Educational disabilities is a broad term used to define those youth who present special learning and behavioral challenges. Some of these youth may not have been identified in their home schools as needing special education services or a modified educational plan. It is not unusual for these youth to have emotional disturbances, learning disabilities, mental retardation, or a combination of these diagnoses. Often these disabilities go unnoticed, or are "hidden" to those not trained to recognize them. The behavioral, cognitive and social challenges that are inherent components of these diagnoses require a unique approach if we are to meet the complex needs of these youth. Increasing the success of youth with educational disabilities while in detention and upon return to the community contributes to a reduction in juvenile crime and recidivism. The Partnership envisions the long-term effect of this program will positively impact the quality of life for all youth with educational disabilities who have become involved with the juvenile justice system.
