Building Inclusive Childcare Services

Overview
The project's primary purpose is to develop, implement, and evaluate a model of service delivery that supports the developmental needs of preschoolers with disabilities, their families, and their caregivers in two community childcare centers. A secondary focus of the project is the development of a public awareness campaign to educate parents, childcare providers, and other community members of the benefits of inclusive childcare experiences for all children.

Major Activities

  • Include preschool children with mild, moderate and severe disabilities from urban, underserved communities in childcare settings with typically developing peers
  • Increase knowledge and skills of childcare providers to work more effectively with preschoolers with disabilities
  • Increase families' satisfaction with childcare experiences for children with disabilities
  • Work with policymakers to identify strategies to maximize the availability of inclusive childcare in Virginia
  • Conduct awareness campaigns about inclusive childcare practices
  • Increase knowledge of students in higher education programs about best inclusive childcare practices
