Overview
This is a project of the Partnership for People with Disabilities at
Virginia Commonwealth University. Through a grant sponsored by the Commonwealth
Neurotrauma Initiative, we are seeking to bridge emerging computer technology
to individuals with cognitive-behavioral impairment caused by brain injury or
autism.
Our plan is to match individuals with appropriate handheld computer devices, train these individuals in how to best use the devices to manage everyday tasks, and offer follow-along intervention and trouble-shooting, while tracking outcomes from functional assessment tests and satisfaction surveys.
What kinds of devices will be used? We will use Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld personal digital assistants (PDAs) primarily, striving to select the best device for each participant, based on the device's capabilities and the participant's needs.
Participant Requirements
- Must be age 14 or over
- Must have a documented acquired brain injury or autism spectrum disorder
- Must have a functional performance deficit in at least one area of activities of daily living
- Must be able to read text on a handheld PDA screen and manipulate PDA keyboard or pen
- Must be able to follow one-step written commands to operate PDA
- Must have a designated caregiver to offer support in using the PDA
- Must live in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with plans to stay in Virginia for at least one year
