Assistive Technology

Overview
The Virginia Assistive Technology System collaborates with the Partnership for People with Disabilities to provide assistive technology support to individuals with disabilities and their families. Assistive technology is any item that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities. Examples include communication devices such as voice output devices, large-button telephones and speech amplifiers; items like pocket organizers and medication organizers; sensory enhancers such as text magnifiers and speech synthesizers; environmental controls like special switches, and doorbells that send flashing lights; mobility devices including scooters and walkers; and self-care items like utensils, toileting assists, and lift and transfer equipment. Information on determining possible devices and services, funding options, and individual rights related to assistive technology are available.

Major Activities

  • Provide information and referral services to individuals seeking knowledge on possible technology solutions whether low or high tech
  • Offer technical assistance on funding assistive technology and accessing third party systems such as Medicaid, public schools, vocational rehabilitation, and private insurance
  • Provide advocacy and policy guidance to assist individuals and parents in determining individual rights to assistive technology
  • Offer training opportunities in the areas of assistive technology awareness, evaluation, funding, and advocacy
