Climate and clothing

The population of the metropolitan Richmond area is approximately 700,000; the city is located in the mid-Atlantic region of the east coast of the United States and is about 100 miles south from the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. The average temperature in the city is 33 degrees Celsius in the summer and 4 degrees Celsius during the winter months. The four distinct seasons necessitate a variety of clothing, including warm clothing for the winter months. The code of dress on campus is informal, except for certain professional programs at VCU Medical Center. Most students wear casual clothing, primarily slacks, blue jeans, shirts, sweaters and sport coats. However, students also are advised to have clothing appropriate for special social functions that may arise. International students are encouraged to bring articles that reflect their country’s culture and dress, as many students in the U.S. are interested in learning about other countries.
