On May 29, 2007, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a new fees schedule to become effective July 30, 2007. This will increase the application and petition fees for almost all benefits granted by USCIS e.g., work authorization, changes of immigration status, replacement of immigration documents or petition to employ non U.S. citizens. It will affect almost all international students, scholars and employees and those university departments who employ them.
The forms used most often by the university nonimmigrant population are:
- I-102 application for replacement/initial nonimmigrant arrival/ departure document was $160 and increasing to $320.
- I-129 petition for a nonimmigrant worker was $190 and increasing to $320.
- I-539 application to extend/change nonimmigrant status was $200 and increasing to $300.
- I-765 application for employment authorization was $180 and increasing to $340.
Fees for permanent resident petitions will also increase:
- I-140 petition for an immigrant worker was $195 and increasing to $475.
- I-145 adjustment of status was $325 and increasing in varying amounts depending on the type of petition in most cases will be $1,010.
Because of this, all applications using the old fee must be received before July 15 and must be absolutely complete with required paperwork and forms. Any applications or petitions received by OIE after July 15 must have the new application fee attached.
