There are two current scenarios for getting a Virginia diver’s
license. Read the directions below and follow the appropriate
process.
Check your SEVIS I-20 for a stamp. This must be your most
current copy. If there is a stamp, you may proceed to the
Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with the following documents:
1. Passport/visa/I-94
2. I-20 with stamp
3. Letter from your international student adviser, Immigration
Services (allow time for processing)
4. Proof of Virginia residency (a letter, which cannot
have plastic window, with a postmark that was sent to your
address, plus one other document, such as a bank statement
or utilities bill with your name and address)
5. Social Security card (if you are ineligible for a SSN,
you no longer have to prove this to DMV)
If you do not have a stamp on your current I-20, you will
need to get your certified school record from Tia Thomas in
Founders Hall (827 W. Franklin St., Room 110). The record
must include your name (as spelled on passport), local address
and date of birth. This is important. When you present this
to the DMV official, make sure they understand that it is
your certified school record. Present the following documents
(originals):
1. Passport/visa/I-94
2. Certified school record
3. Proof of Virginia residency (a letter, which cannot
have plastic window, with a postmark that was sent to your
address, plus one other document, such as a bank statement
or utilities bill with your name and address)
4. Social Security card (if you are ineligible for a SSN,
you no longer have to prove this to DMV)
