The Office of International Education and the School of World Studies are offering students an opportunity to travel to St. Petersburg, Russia for a program of study in Russian area studies. Students will examine Russian-American relations through their participation in the 17th Russian-American Seminar, a set of lectures organized specifically for our group, and visits to governmental offices. Museum trips (including the Hermitage) and side trips to historic sites around St. Petersburg will be included.

RussiaCourse and credit options:
3 credits in Russian Area Studies: Upper-level credits in INTL or POLI, depending on individual student’s major/minor

Course description: This program offers students 3 credits in Russian Area Studies, which students will earn by attending university lectures (in English) and participating in the 17th Russian-American Seminar. This seminar attracts well-known academics and politicians from around the world. Both the classes and the seminar will be held at St. Petersburg State University (SPSU). Students will live in the SPSU dormitories. 

Students have the option of extending their return flights (for a fee) and arranging a Russian language program through SPSU. Please note: this is not a part of the study abroad program.

Program cost:  $2,400 + VCU tuition

The program fee is $2,400 and includes the following:

  • Round trip airfare
  • RussiaAccommodations
  • Breakfasts
  • Study visits and tours
  • Museum admissions
  • Ground transportation in Russia
  • Boat tour of St. Petersburg
  • On-site program director support
  • Basic “survival Russian” language lessons before departure and at SPSU
  • Russian student visa
  • Bus and subway passes in St. Petersburg
  • Books
  • Application fee and deposit
  • Pre-departure orientation
  • VCU administrative fees
  • International student identification card

The following are not included in the program fee. Students are responsible for:

  • VCU tuition and fees
  • Lunch and dinner (Cafeterias on site in the dorms and on campus)
  • Passport application fee
  • Personal expenses during the program, estimated at $350
  • Anything not specifically mentioned above

Please budget for these additional expenses.

Airfare: Round-trip airfare is included. Students will fly together with the program director from Richmond International Airport.

RussiaEligibility: Students must have had Russ 101 or permission from the program director, Micol Hammack. A 2.0 GPA is required to participate in the summer study abroad program.

Registration deadline: Jan. 23, 2008. Students must have passports at the time of application. 

Activities and excursions: Museums, surrounding areas of St. Petersburg (Petergof, Pushkin), tours of St. Petersburg.

Accommodations and meals: Participants will stay in a dorm in St. Petersburg.  Students will share bedrooms with one other person. They are responsible for all meals except for breakfast.

RussiaProgram director: The program will be led by Micol Hammack, instructor in the University College and adjunct to the School of World Studies. She teaches Focused Inquiry and Russian at VCU, and began leading the St. Petersburg program last year.
