The School of World Studies and the Office of International Education at Virginia Commonwealth University are pleased to offer an intensive German language immersion course for summer 2008 in the beautiful city of Vienna, Austria. German language and culture courses will be offered in an intensive four-week session in the heart of Vienna. Cultural visits, several tours and numerous activities will be included. Additional trips to Slovenia and the Czech Republic will be made available.
Course and credit options: 4 to 6 VCU credits:
Participants may choose between GRMN 101 Elementary German (4 credits) or GRMN 102 Elementary German (4 credits) at the elementary level, or two classesfrom the intermediate andadvanced level: GRMN 201 Intermediate German, GRMN 202 Intermediate GermanReadings, GRMN205 Intermediate German Conversation, GRMN 305 AdvancedGerman Conversation and GRMN 491 Topics.
German language courses: Participants will take intensive German instruction during the fourweeks through Cultura Wien Language School at the beginner, intermediate or advanced levels. Four to six credits are available, depending on student need. Students will be required to take a placement test prior to the beginning of classes.

Program cost: $1,675 + airfare + applicable VCU tuition
The program fee includes thefollowing:

The following are not included in the program fee. Students are responsible for:
- Airfare
- VCU tuition and fees
- Meals
- U.S. passport application fee
- Personal expenses during the program (estimated at $1,500)
- Anything not specifically mentioned above
Please budget for these additional expenses.
Airfare: Airfare is not included. Participants are responsible for their own round-trip travel arrangements from the U.S. to Austria. Lonnes will assist participants in identifying low-cost airfare options for the group. For best fares you should purchase your ticket prior to April 15.
Eligibility: Applications will be considered on a first-come first-serve basis. All applicants are required to submit an essay and will be interviewed individually to be eligible for participation.
Application deadline: March 15, 2008. Applications will be accepted until the deadline, or until participant space is full.
Activities and excursions: (dates- to be announced): Students will take either 20 hours or 26 hours of classes each week, rotating every other week between morning and afternoon class times. Vienna tours, visits to major attractions and museums, social events, hiking and an excursion to Bratislava, Slovakia will be included in the program. Additional group trips (such as Heiligenkreuz, Niedersulz, Kloster Melk, and an overnight to Prague, among others) will be available for those interested at a discounted group rate.
Accommodations and meals: Participants will be housed in a dormitory available through Cultura Wien. The residence is located in the 2nd district of Vienna, very close to the “Prater,” a large park in the heart of the city, offering many recreational possibilities. Two to four students will share a spacious apartment, consisting of two to four single rooms with cable television, Internet access and a fully equipped kitchen (refrigerator, stove, microwave, coffee-machine, dishes and cutlery), a bathroom and a WC. Bed sheets are provided but students are encouraged to bring their own towels. If students wish to use the Internet, they must bring their own laptop with a RJ-45 cable. The residence also consists of a party room, common rooms, a garage for bicycles and a laundry (washing-machines can only be used with a quick-card). The distance to Cultura Wien is approximately 15 minutes by public transportation.
Meals are not included. Students are encouraged to frequent student cafeterias offering warm meals for a reasonable rate. Lonnes will provide students tips andideas on how to “eat for cheap” while on a student budget in Vienna.
Program director: The program is directed by Jessica Lonnes. Lonnes is thecoordinator of advising in VCU’sSchool of World Studies. Having lived and worked in Vienna for six years, and spending a total of 10 years abroad, she brings to the program an extensive knowledge and passion for the city, Austria and the surrounding countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
