The Office of International Education and the School of World Studies are pleased to offer a unique opportunity for students to study on-site in Vienna, Austria. Vienna is known for its music, theater and relaxed lifestyle. Experience Vienna’s rich cultural and historical past with visits to major attractions, including the famous Ringstrasse, St. Stephan’s, the imperial palaces of the Hofburg and Schönbrunn, and much more. Walk in the footsteps of the Habsburgs, Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, Freud, Schnitzler, Klimt, Schiele, and others. Enjoy Vienna’s famous coffeehouses, restaurants, and multi-ethnic, polyglot diversity.

Course description:
This course is a broad interdisciplinary approach to an understanding of German culture, language and literature with lectures in English by guest speakers and/or use of films as required. This course will not satisfy foreign language requirements. No knowledge of German is required. All work is done in English. Participants are required to attend several class sessions in Richmond before departure (to be scheduled at the end of the spring semester).
Program cost: $1,595 + airfare + applicable VCU tuition
The program fee is $1,595 and includes the following:

- Airfare

Please budget for these additional expenses.
Airfare: Airfare is not included. Participants are responsible for their own round-trip travel arrangements between the United States and Vienna and are encouraged to make flight arrangements far in advance. Students should plan to arrive in Vienna at the Pallottihaus on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 27 and depart on the morning of June 9.
Application deadline: Feb. 15, 2008. Applications will be accepted until the deadline or until participant space is full. Please register early, as space is limited.
Eligibility: Students must have a 2.0 GPA to apply. There are no prerequisites for this program, but students with some German-language background are especially encouraged to apply.
Activities and excursions: Students will have breakfast each day at the Pallottihaus followed by morning class sessions and visits to Vienna’s major attractions and museums. Some evening events, concerts, speakers and meals are also a part of the program as is scheduled free time. The program will also include a scenic Danube River cruise from Melk to Krems, towns located in the foothills of the Alps in Austria’s world-famous wine country.
Accommodations and meals: Participants will be housed in double rooms at the Pallottihaus in Vienna. Breakfast and several group meals are provided but students are otherwise responsible for lunch and dinner.
Program director: The program will be led by Dr. Paul Dvorak, professor of German and program coordinator for the Governor’s Foreign Language Academies at VCU. Dvorak has lived and studied extensively in Austria and Vienna. His published books, articles, and translations focus on turn-of-the-century Vienna and contemporary German and Austrian literary and cultural topics.
