The VCU Office of International Education and one of its 15 International Partnership Universities – Curtin University in Perth, Australia – are pleased to offer a unique opportunity for students to explore aboriginal studies at Curtin University. In this program, students will develop an intimate understanding of Aborigine culture, history and politics through workshops and excursions. They will prepare for the program with a series of lectures given by a Curtin visiting professor. These lectures will be offered preceding the program. On June 14, students will travel to Perth, Australia for the on-site workshops and excursions. The workshops will include information about the people and history, arts and crafts, geography and the linguistic groups of Aborigines.
Course and credit options:
4 credits FRLG 203: Language and Identity: Aboriginal Studies.
Course description: This course will engage VCU students in a cultural experience in Perth. Students will develop an intimate understanding of Aboriginal cultures, history and politics through workshops and excursions. Students will prepare for the program with a series of lectures given by a Curtin visiting professor. These lectures will be offered during March and April preceding the program and all participants are required to attend. On June 14, the students will travel to Perth, Australia for the on-site workshops and excursions. The workshops will include information about the people and history, the geography, the linguistic groups, arts and crafts of Aboriginal people. The in-class sessions will be complemented by several overnight and day-long field excursions. Students will be evaluated on workshop performance, quizzes and a final paper. The paper is due in July during a post-program meeting.
Program cost: $2,350 + airfare + applicable VCU tuition
The program fee is $2,350 and includes the following:

Please budget for these additional expenses.
Airfare: Students are responsible for the cost of airfare from the U.S. to Perth, Australia and must budget for this cost. Students will be advised of which flight to reserve and early purchase is recommended.
Eligibility: All VCU students in good academic standing are eligible for this program.
Registration deadline: March 15, 2008. Applications will be accepted until the deadline or until participant space is full.
Activities and excursions: The program includes several unique and exciting excursions for the participants. Students will visit the Perth Museum, Yanchep National Park, Rottnest Island, Clontarf and David Wirrapanda Foundation, Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service, Aboriginal Legal Service, Wadjuck Radio, Australian football match, Dumbartung Aboriginal Corporation, CALM Mundaring, Yirra Yaakin Aboriginal Corporation, Mogumber/New Nocia Aboriginal Corporation and a movie screening.
Accommodations and meals: Students will be housed in single rooms at the YMCA Jewell House. Facilities include 24 hour reception, internet kiosk, fax and copying, tourist information, free luggage storage, linen, daily housekeeping service, and guest laundries. There is a microwave and refrigerator on alternate floors. Students are responsible for their meals and can eat at local restaurants or at the café inside of the Jewell House.
