Education Abroad 2008 photo and writing contest

Open to all VCU students who studied abroad during the academic year 2007-08 (including summer 2008)

Deadline for all submissions is Sept. 5, 2008.

Prizes, Prizes, Prizes
Photo: One grand prize winner will receive a $50 iTunes Gift Card. Winners from each category will receive a $25 iTunes Gift Card.

Writing: One grand prize winner will receive a $50 iTunes Gift Card.

Writing guidelines
In a piece of non-fiction writing, reflect on your experience abroad. Submissions should be between 1,000-1,500 words.

Photo guidelines
Categories include:

  • Academic: capture students in an academic setting.
  • People: capture images of students interacting with local populations and should portray the essence of the study abroad experience.
  • Places: include a landmark or landscape that is clearly identifiable as an international location.
  • Open category: miscellaneous photos.

Submission
Send all submissions as an e-mail attachment to Abroad@vcu.edu. Title the subject of the e-mail for the Writing Contest as “2008 writing contest submission” and save the file as a Microsoft Word document as follows: FirstName_LastNameWriting.doc (for example, Michael_JordanWriting.doc). For photo contest all submissions must be in digital format with the title of the subject as “2008 photo contest submission” and save the files as follows: FirstName_LastNameCategoryTitle.jpg (For example, Tom_CruiseAcademic.jpg). In the body of the e-mail, please include your name, the name and location of your study abroad program, and a short description of your photo that is no more than 500 words.

These Guatemalan girls are coming from or going to school. Two are dressed in Catholic school attire and the other dressed in traditional Mayan clothing. In Antigua, the Mayan culture is not often celebrated. It’s common that Mayan children have to abandon their Mayan culture when they begin school.

The miscellaneous photo is in Budapest, Hungary. The photo is of the reflection of the Fisherman’s Bastion in a building across the street. You can see me taking the picture on the right in the fourth panel from the bottom. I thought this was interesting look at something very old in the reflection of a modern building.
