Financial Aid

VCU Education Abroad works in close conjunction with the Office of Financial Aid to provide as much financial assistance to you as is allowable by law. All need-based and merit-based aid is transferable to an approved study abroad program, with the exception of work study.
For all types of programs the following steps must be taken.

• You must be able to demonstrate that you have been accepted to a bona fide education abroad program that has been approved by VCU Education Abroad.

• You must register with VCU Education Abroad and pay the appropriate fees. We will then register you for the STUA placeholder.

• A budget that has been modified to reflect the full expenses of your study abroad program must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office. The means by which the budget is developed varies depending on what program you are participating in, however in all cases the budget will be provided by VCU Education Abroad.

• If at all possible, you must receive preapproval for the credit taken while you are away. All application packets contain a form for this purpose. It is submitted to your department or school upon receipt of your transcript and helps facilitate transfer of your credits. You must transfer back a minimum of 12 credits in order to retain your financial aid.

• When requested you must indicate to your host institution or organization that upon completion of your program your transcript is to be submitted to VCU Education Abroad.

In the meantime, please submit your FAFSA and requested financial aid documentation as if you were staying at VCU. If you have any questions regarding financial aid, please contact the Education Abroad Office or the Office of Financial Aid.
