Fire System Testing
VCU's Office of Environmental Health and Safety conducts inspections and testing of fire protection systems including: kitchen hoods, halon, sprinkler systems, fire alarms, smoke detectors, fire shutters, standpipes, check valves, fire department connections and fire pumps.
FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS are tested semiannually, each device is inspected and functionally tested. An annual audible and visual test is also performed in conjunction with the Control Center for connected systems.
SPRINKLER SYSTEMS are inspected, and all flow switches for wet systems are activated each quarter. Dry systems are partially activated annually and full activations are performed every three years to minimize problems with rusting and pipe blockage. If a blockage is found, the system is required to be completely flushed to assure it will perform in a fire emergency. Sprinkler gauges for dry systems are inspected weekly, and wet system gauges monthly.
KITCHEN HOOD INSPECTIONS are performed semiannually as required by code. Fusible links are replaced annually to assure functionality. Kitchen hood systems are required to be cleaned at least annually, or more frequently as necessary to prevent the build up of grease in the hood or duct work.
HALON SYSTEMS are inspected semiannually by the Fire Safety Section and outside contractors to completely test the suppression system and verify the gas quantity. Halon systems are found in the Clinical Support Center, 6th floor and Main Hospital B-220.
STANDPIPES are inspected annually to verify valves are closed, covers are installed and there are no leaks. Covers are provided and installed as necessary. Standpipes exposed to freezing weather are checked each fall to make sure all low points are drained and dry.
FIRE/SMOKE DAMPERS undergo operational tests every four years to verify that dampers will fully close in the event of a fire emergency.
