Television Distribution Systems
There are two major systems maintained by MSS for the reception
and distribution of video programming to sites on both campuses:
Closed Circuit Television System (CCTV)
MSS maintains and operates the University-wide television
distribution system. There are two separate systems, one located
on the Medical College of Virginia Campus and one on the Academic
Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. Each system allows
for distribution of satellite signals, pre-recorded video
tapes, live programming, and off-air broadcasts to locations
connected to the CCTV system as well as recording of satellite
and off-air programming. The systems are interconnected by
fiber optic cable, allowing transfer of signals between campuses.
The Academic Campus system was
built in 1986 and includes seven satellite receiving systems,
one microwave up-link system and one ITFS microwave downlink
system. Thirteen channels are available to distribute of these
signals to connected sites.
The MCV Campus system was originally
built in the 1950's with a major up-grade in 1986. It features
three satellite receiving systems and utilizes seven channels
for distribution of signals to connected
sites.
Master Antenna Television Systems (MATV)
MSS helps maintain the MCV Hospital MATV Entertainment Television
System and maintainsand operates a small MATV system on the
Academic Campus.
The MATV systems are a collection of individual channel antennas
designed to pick up local, "off air" channels and
combine them into a signal system for distribution to individual
televisions located in Hospital patient rooms and other locations
around the University where access to local broadcast television
is necessary.
The Hospital system provides programming from six local broadcasters,
plus two University channels used for patient education. The
Academic system features programming from six local stations.
