Richmond, the
capital of Virginia, is the hub of a metropolitan area with a population of
nearly 700,000. Its cosmopolitan atmosphere, moderate climate, reasonable
cost of living, and convenient location at the junction of two major
interstate highways make it an ideal place to live and work.
The city offers many business
and educational opportunities for its residents. It is a major southern
financial and business center, home to more than a dozen Fortune 500
companies and headquarters to the Fifth Federal Reserve District.
Cultural and entertainment
opportunities in the city include the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the
Richmond Symphony, the Richmond Ballet, professional baseball and ice
hockey, collegiate basketball and NASCAR racing.
There also are a variety of
professional performances by theater companies, the Richmond Symphony, and
Richmond Ballet. Many performances often have a VCU connection, through its
Performing Arts Center and its music, dance and theater departments in the
School of Arts.
The Science Museum of Virginia
has hands-on exhibits, planetarium shows, and Omnimax films. The Virginia
Museum of Fine Arts has the largest Faberge collection outside the former
Soviet Union, and extensive post-modern, Egyptian, Oriental, Art Deco and
Art Nouveau collections. The Valentine Museum and the Museum of the
Confederacy offer history buffs ample chance to step into the past; and
plantations in the countryside, Civil War reenactments, and living history
interpretations at Agecroft Hall, a reassembled Tudor manor house brought
over from England.
Of Richmond's many parks,
Maymont Park offers formal Italian gardens, a Japanese garden, a Victorian
mansion and wild animal habitats. With concerts and special events on
Brown's Island, jaunts to Belle Isle, or the wilderness of James River Park,
Richmond has the right amount of action or solitude.
Vita courses, river kayaking,
tennis, and golf are popular; the Diamond host the Richmond Braves baseball
team, tournaments for basketball or hockey are in the Richmond Coliseum; and
assortments of other clubs throughout the city offer rugby, fencing and
squash.
In addition, Richmond is
centrally located in Virginia, and is within a two-hour drive of Virginia
Beach, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Washington D.C.
