Medical
College of Virginia Campus - An Academic Medical Center
The Medical College of
Virginia (MCV) campus of VCU is located in the heart of the state capital,
Richmond, a metropolitan area with a population of over 600,000. The MCV
campus is one of the largest and most advanced centers for health care and
education in the United States, and offers degrees in medicine, dentistry,
pharmacy, allied health, and nursing. With about 20,000 undergraduate,
graduate, and health professional students on two campuses, VCU is one of
the largest public universities in Virginia.

The Medical College of
Virginia Campus, comprised of the Schools of Allied Health Professions,
Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy, and the Medical College of
Virginia Hospitals (MCVH), is located within a few blocks of the State
Capitol, State Supreme Court, State Archives, City Hall, and the Historic
Shockoe Slip District.
Two miles west, in Richmond's
Fan District, is the Academic Campus, with its School of Graduate Studies,
School of the Arts, the College of Humanities and Sciences and its Schools
of Mass Communications, Business, Education, and Social Work. The university
has purchased and preserved many of the Victorian townhouses in this
residential area, where brick sidewalks and cobblestone streets "fan" out
amid the historic neighborhood.
University Services
Some on-campus housing is
available for single students, but most graduate students live off campus.
There is a wide variety of housing accommodations at a wide range of prices;
many graduate students live in the Fan District because of its proximity to
both campuses. The university's free shuttle buses run between the two
campuses. Parking facilities for students are limited, however, the Health
Sciences Campus is accessible from most areas by public transportation and
some neighborhoods are within biking distance.
VCU offers prepaid medical
care through the Student Health Services. Students (and their spouses and
dependent children) can also take advantage of a moderately priced
hospitalization plan.
The gymnasium on the Health
Sciences Campus offers and extensive intramural sports program as well as a
full range of recreational opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
These include basketball, tennis, volleyball, racquetball, handball, squash
and a pool. There are also facilities for weight training and locker rooms
with showers and saunas. the Academic Campus offers the Thalhimer Tennis
Courts in addition to a pool and more recreational facilities.
