Mary P. Coleman Awards An endowment was established to support activities and excellence among graduate students in microbiology & immunology. Named after Mary Coleman, she came from a prominent Virginia family and put a high value on education. She was also the mother of Phil Coleman, who was a brilliant and distinguished faculty member of our M&I dept. {until about 15 years ago}. He had a PhD in microbiology, was a veterinarian and also earned a law degree. He was acting chair, Associate Dean of MCV, and Assoc VP for Health Science. At his mother's bequest, an endowment was established to award excellence among graduate students in Microbiology and Immunology. Each year, in conjunction with Forbes Research Day (March), this award is traditionally presented to a senior student with an outstanding GPA who has demonstrated remarkable research accomplishments and student leadership.
