Residency // Selected Training // Ultrasound
|
| VCU
has implemented a curriculum for teaching of Emergency Ultrasound based on
curricula endorsed by both ACEP and SAEM. There is currently no national certification for Emergency Ultrasound but
the certification of such an endorsed curriculum will allow residents to gain
institution specific certification for Ultrasound in their respective places of
practice.
We are developing a system to document our residents proficiency in using ultrasound. |
 |
| Residents
gain experience in using ultrasound to diagnose hemothorax, pericardial
effusion, and hemoperitoneum in the context of trauma. The use of the FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma) exam in trauma patients is almost a standard part of our trauma work-up when indicated. Expertise in trans-abdominal sonography (gallbladder, aorta, pelvic
pathology) is obtained and trans-vaginal ultrasonography is used to assist in
the diagnosis of tubo-ovarian abscess, pelvic masses, and ectopic pregnancy.
